Central Midwest HERC

Responsible for the management of the day-to-day operation of the Agroecosystems Entomology Lab at the West Central Research & Extension Center, including data collection and analysis, field research, extension and outreach, planning research design, supervision and training of employees, project coordination, ordering supplies, and equipment maintenance. The Agroecosystems Entomology Lab will pursue research questions addressing the ecology and management of agricultural pests with an emphasis on practical applications for integrated pest management in field crops. Research projects may address a variety of themes, such as food web dynamics, insect behavior, compatibility of pest control strategies (including biological control by natural enemies), and resistance management. Research will support extension programming to develop proactive educational programs in IPM of arthropod pests of field crops grown in west central Nebraska. Position requires obtaining a pesticide applicator's license within 6 months of hire.

Bachelor's degree in Entomology, Agronomy, Plant & Soil Sciences, Horticulture, Biology, Zoology or related field required plus two years of experience with management of or research on crop pests required. Degree must be completed before start date. Must have knowledge of arthropod pest biology and agronomy; skill in identifying and counting arthropods, as well as identifying insect damage on crop plants. Experience developing and implementing experimental designs in both the laboratory and field settings. Demonstrated computer proficiency with experience creating slides, graphs, charts and other presentation materials for publications and presentations along with creating computer spreadsheets for data entry and analysis. Must have a valid driver's license and meet University driver eligibility requirements.

Preferred experience or ability to be trained in laboratory molecular techniques and specialized insect identification along with establishing and maintaining colonies of live arthropods and plants. Experience operating tractors and other agricultural equipment.
