The Department of Mechanical and Aerospace Engineering at the Missouri University of Science and Technology (formerly the University of Missouri-Rolla) invites applications for a non-tenure-track (NTT) teaching professor position. NTT teaching faculty members contribute to the core activity of teaching and are expected to be fully engaged in the department's curriculum development and delivery. The initial appointment will be for three years and is potentially renewable for additional multiple year appointments, with an expected affiliation with the department over an extended period.
Applicants are expected to provide high-quality teaching at the undergraduate level in mechanical and/or aerospace engineering, including fundamental areas such as dynamics, control of ME/AE systems, thermal and fluid systems analysis, structures, aerodynamics, and engineering design. Preference will be given to candidates with teaching strength and interest in engineering design.
As NTT teaching faculty at Missouri S&T may be promoted, it is anticipated that the successful candidate would achieve a sustained level of recognition by students and peers as a stimulating, inspiring and effective teacher, as well as develop excellence in the production of effective learning materials, improved teaching techniques, and state-of-the-art delivery systems. The teaching assignments will be a minimum of 75% of the workload, with typically three to four (3 credit hour) courses per semester during the academic year. Service activities may include laboratory supervisory responsibilities, design team advising, academic advising, curriculum development, program assessment, and assisting in the implementation of a new ME program at a partner institution.
An earned doctorate in Mechanical or Aerospace Engineering, or closely related field, is required. Successful prior teaching experience will be an important consideration, and industrial experience is also desirable. The Department of Mechanical and Aerospace Engineering is currently in a position of strength after seven years of deliberate implementation of its ambitious strategic plan. Both research expenditures and Ph.D. enrollment for the department have doubled in five years, with broad support from federal and industrial sponsors. In addition, multiple junior faculty have received CAREER and DoD young investigator awards and many Ph.D. students have received prestigious fellowships from NASA, NSF, and DoD. The department is the largest department on campus; both Mechanical and Aerospace Engineering programs are the largest in the state of Missouri. It is situated in a state-of-the-art 145,000 ft2 facility and has 27 internationally recognized tenured/tenure-track faculty, 5 teaching faculty, 12 staff, over 250 graduate students (including 128 PhD students), over 1,000 undergraduate students, and over 12,000 living alumni.
